Boxing Day Isn’t a Day to Throw Punches

a holiday message from Gordon Brown:

About 28 years ago I moved to Canada where Boxing Day is a federal statutory holiday.  A couple of years before I moved to Canada, I had started working out in boxing gyms, so, my punch-drunk head figured Boxing Day must celebrate pugilism.  Of course, that’s entirely incorrect. While the exact origins are debatable, the tradition dates back from somewhere between 300 and 1000 years. It turns out in this case the word boxing refers to giving a box of gifts to the needy on the day after Christmas.  So, this holiday season, celebrate Boxing Day by donating to A Place to Stand or by giving directly to those in need in your community. I think we can all agree that this a kinder, more productive way to celebrate than punching someone.
